Is CBD Oil Safe For Cats?

People around the world are finding alternative treatments for themselves and for their pets and CBD is one of them. This isn’t surprising, given that more individuals are turning to cannabis as a natural solution for their health problems, and studies have consistently demonstrated the plant’s beneficial effects on inflammation and other diseases. However, as well-studied as cannabis’ effect on people may be, no official big scientific studies on its influence on pets have been conducted. In this article, we will be discussing and sticking around to know CBD for cats is safe or not.

Is CBD safe for cats, then? What ailments might it be able to treat? Let’s see what we can find out!

What Is CBD Oil and How Does It Work?

Cannabis plants have over 100 active chemicals, but cannabidiol, or CBD, is the most commonly used for therapeutic purposes. CBD differs from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis’ main active ingredient, and does not have the component to make you high. CBD oils have a high CBD concentration and can be used to treat a variety of ailments.

CBD oil is frequently used to subjectively boost comfort and improve the quality of life in pets, not necessarily to heal diseases, according to Inman. This form of treatment should only be done after consulting with your veterinarian and with their permission.

Is Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil Safe For Cats?

CBD oil is generally safe for cats, despite the fact that no scientific studies have specifically investigated the impact of cannabis on pets. However, administering your cat CBD oil can have some negative side effects, such as gastrointestinal distress and sedation, both of which can be alleviated by stopping the use of the oil.

“From a medical standpoint, I believe the more pressing concern is ensuring that animals are dosed correctly.” This indicates that the CBD oil is having the desired effect and that you are not overdosing by accident,” he explains.

The absence of an official, documented study into the effects of cannabis products on cats makes Dr. Liza Guess, a clinical assistant professor at the Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, cautious to endorse them.

She goes on to say that because the FDA doesn’t regulate the CBD products on the market, pet owners can’t be confident they’re giving their pets the correct dosage.

“People who want to offer CBD for cats should conduct their research before buying anything online,” Richter advises. “The marketplace is very much a ‘buyer beware’ atmosphere, and individuals should make sure the thing they’re buying has been laboratory tested for both content and contaminants such as germs, fungi, and heavy metals.”

As an ER veterinarian, Inman says he frequently encounters marijuana poisoning in the animals that come into his practice. “You can typically detect whether someone’s marijuana has been ingested by their pet.” In more serious cases, I’ve had to put animals in hospitals until the effects have worn off.”

Is CBD Oil Legal?

“In an ideal world, your veterinarian would be able to discuss this treatment with you as a possible option for your pet,” Richter says. “However, depending on where you live, your veterinarian may or may not be legally authorized to have this talk with you.” “Even if you live in a place where cannabis is legal, a veterinarian cannot advise a pet owner on how to utilize these products safely.” There are campaigners, including Richter, who want to amend the legislation.

“For example, a bill has been introduced in the California State Legislature to discuss the use of medical cannabis for animals and the involvement of veterinarians,” he explains. “Right now, there’s a heated debate about whether or not veterinarians should be able to discuss and recommend cannabis to their patients, and if so, how that should be done.”

It’s critical to be able to discuss all types of treatments with your veterinarian, and Richter recommends doing so before giving your pet any kind of cannabis. He explains, “There’s no need to start providing any form of drug or supplement without first talking to your veterinarian.”
