What Is the Difference Between CBD and THC?

CBD and THC are the two most popular cannabinoids that are found in hemp and marijuana plants. While both cannabinoids are naturally-occurring within the cannabis family, they differ in legality, psychoactivity, medicinal application, and molecular structure. CBD and THC actually have the same molecular structure but their atoms are arranged differently. The differences in atom arrangement account for the differences between the two cannabinoids.

The Main Difference Between CBD and THC: Psychoactivity

The main difference between these two cannabinoids lies with psychoactivity. THC is psychoactive and is the cannabinoid that’s responsible for the high, euphoric feeling experienced by marijuana users. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it has no mind-altering effects. An interesting fact about CBD is that it actually balances the mind-altering effects of THC, oftentimes lessening the psychoactivity and reducing some of the negative effects that can be associated with THC use.

The Difference in Legality Between CBD and THC

Hemp-derived CBD is legal across all 50 states. Marijuana-derived CBD is only legal in states with medical marijuana, recreational marijuana, and/or limited-access CBD. THC is only legal in states with medical and/or recreational marijuana laws. We recommend doing research on your state’s marijuana laws prior to purchasing marijuana-derived CBD or THC. Hemp-derived CBD is legal federally but must only contain 0.3% THC or less.

The Different Side Effects of CBD and THC

CBD is generally well-tolerated with rare cases of side effects reported. CBD side effects may include fatigue, dry mouth, diarrhea, and changes in appetite. These side effects may be prevented through changes in dosage, administration methods, full-spectrum vs. isolate, and preventing drug interactions. THC has non-life threatening side effects that may include memory loss, dry mouth, red eyes, and slow reaction times. While both compounds can offer different side effects, they are still non-toxic and don’t offer a risk of overdose in large amounts.
