What’s the Best Way to Store Bulk CBD?

When you decide to invest in bulk CBD, there are a few things you’ll need to consider before and after your purchase. In an under-regulated industry, the first step is finding the right bulk CBD supplier. Here is the checklist you’ll want to complete before committing to any purchase:

  • COAs: Check COAs to ensure that the cannabinoid content is correct, there’s no pesticide exposure, toxic solvent residue, minimal heavy metal traces, and no mildew or mold contamination.
  • Hemp standards: Only purchase from a company that offers full traceability for their hemp. Their CBD should only be extracted from domestic, non-GMO hemp plants that are either certified organic or cultivated with strict organic farming practices. Traceability is key for reducing the risk of synthetic CBD and pesticide exposure.
  • Extraction standards: CO2 extraction is the safest extraction method for CBD. Only purchase bulk CBD that’s been sourced with this extraction method. Other solvents used for extraction can leave a residue if not properly executed. This creates a toxic product that is harmful for human use.
  • Manufacturing standards: Make sure you’re purchasing bulk CBD from a cGMP-certified facility. This ensures that the company you’re purchasing from is following the strict manufacturing standards followed by other industries.

Once you’ve done your homework and have found the right bulk CBD supplier to entrust your brand and products with, the next step is purchase and storage.

Storing Bulk CBD for Longer Shelf Life

You can make the most out of your investment by practicing proper storage methods in order to achieve longer shelflife. In order to keep your bulk CBD’s initial quality, follow these guidelines for storage:

  • Avoid direct sunlight: UV radiation is responsible for deteriorating everything it comes in contact with. The same is true of CBD– UV radiation can cause your CBD to lose potency. Keep your bulk CBD stored away from direct sunlight, preferably in a dark place.
  • Avoid heat: Heat can also cause the same deterioration among CBD, causing it to lose potency. It’s best to keep your bulk CBD in a cool place. CBD isolate and water-soluble CBD powder can actually be kept in a freezer as long as they are tightly sealed. CBD oil can be kept in a refrigerator but we do not recommend storing oil-based products or water-soluble CBD liquid in the freezer since this can compromise the integrity of your product.
  • Avoid moisture: Keeping your CBD dry is crucial. When storing your bulk CBD in the fridge or freezer, please be sure to keep these items tightly sealed before placing them inside. Exposure to moisture can cause potency issues and increase your risk of developing mildew or mold.
  • Avoid air: Oxidation accelerates the aging process when it comes into contact with virtually anything. Keeping your bulk CBD tightly sealed to avoid oxidation is key to extending its shelf life.

When Does Bulk CBD Expire?

Bulk CBD typically has a one-year shelf life. Your bulk CBD supplier should always include expiration dates on all products. CBD actually remains safe after expiration, it does, however, begin to lose potency. So while it may still be safe to use in your product formulations, the accuracy of potency and dosage will be skewed by this. We do not recommend formulating with expired CBD.
